Walkin' in a Pastel Wonderland

This winter season, designers have brought about more colors to their winter fabric repertoire. In recent years, there has been a multitude of dark cranberries, blacks, and "winter white" designs. However, the winter collections for 2015 have happened to present pastel colors inviting a variety of looks to be added to stores this winter. Also known as powdery pastels, these color hues have weaved their way from spring to winter in this years' designs.

Prada released a line of lightly colored garments in Milan: showing off their unique wintery take on these subtle yet vibrant colors.

Not only did Prada display these colors, but also designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, and Dries Van Noten.

This season keep an eye to for these powdery colors popping into many designs.

How the Military has Affected the Fashion World

Long before cargo jackets were incorporated into the fashion world, they were adopted by the military as a "uniformesque" look. The look was primarily adopted at the beginning of the 20th century and even though it is still prevalent as military wear, the fashion world has adopted it as a trend for this fall/winter season.

The first appearances of these jackets as a fashion piece was after World War 2 when civilians were starting to notice the olive green pieces were easy to work with, comfortable, and added a slightly more masculine look to the feminine styles of women. Since then, these jacket have cycled in and out of style similar to every other trend.

Cargo jackets have made a recent reappearance and are not a piece to be overlooked. These jackets can easily be worn to add a statement piece to any outfit. Now, a multitude of designers have featured their own take on the military "cargo" jacket. Thus showing how the military subconsciously impacted the fashion world.

Pretty Leaves and Long Sleeves

My absolute favorite time is approaching us at a rapid pace: FALL! Pretty leaves and long sleeves is my motto for this epoch of beauty.

Today, I am going to talk about colors for autumn and what to pair them with!
By far, my favorite color which is already showcasing itself is Olive Green. Although it is not a typical neutral, it consistently acts as one while being paired with other colors. Creating a color scheme with this deep forest green can be tricky, but a safe trio I have discovered looks amazing together includes white and red/pink tints in the mix. Christian Dior explored the realm of this rich green in multiple of his designs during his Fall 2015 Couture Collection Fashion Show. Here are a few of my favorites:
Although it is not easily spotted, the dress pants included in the design on the right have a slight pink tone balancing out the richness of the contrast of Olive Green and White. As for the dress on the left, the mix of pink toned florals add a message of femininity to the boxy shape of the dress.

Another flash of color highlighted on the runway for Fall of 2015 is a flash of red. Many designer such as Kate Spade have been pairing neutrals together and implementing a pop of red into the look. This season, Kate Spade took a leap and showcased this strong hued color in a multitude of designs, here are a few which stand out:

These two color schemes placed together by designers on the runway are quite different from the years in the past. There is going to be a bit more of brightness this Fall and I am so excited to wear the colors.

Northside takes Southtown SATX

Two Northside girls took Southtown today. Alina and I ventured in and out of downtown San Antonio searching to discover the up and coming area known as "Southtown San Antonio". Finally, after an hour of looking, we found the trendy area.

Disclaimer: Alina and I have a weakness for researching cute cafes and coffee shops and checking them out. Southtown is made up solely of trendy places similar to this, so naturally we gravitated to the area quickly.

We started out the morning at a quaint coffee shop called The White Elephant Coffee Co. Honestly, I was scared when we were driving to the coffee shop, because we had to drive through a scary part of San Antonio, but once we got there, it was all better. The coffee was amazing and slightly stronger than any other iced latte I have tasted. Definitely a 10 out of 10 place.

After our morning kickstart, we tried to find the shopping area of Southtown and ended up not where we wanted. Eventually we humbled ourselves down to ask an information kiosk where the shops were and he pointed us in the right direction.

Hot and hungry, we pulled up to the area and dashed into a cafe titled Halcyon. It was super cute and had calm vibes throughout the lounge.

After a long day of exploring, Alina and I decided to dedicate another day as well to exploring Southtown SATX a little more.

If you are ever in the mood to explore a piece of San Antonio, Texas, I strongly suggest checking out this trendy area of the city.

All the Feels: WJMC 2015

The 2015 year of The Washington Journalism & Media Conference has been nothing short of breathtaking. Every night I would sit on my plastic mattress and only desire to be home on my comfortable bed, but every day, I would regret the desire more and more.

When I first arrived and knew no one in my group, I thought, "well this is going to suck, it's so awkward." Slowly but quickly, things began to change and friendships began to bud. Shannon and I quickly found each other and bonded at an instant. Then Chloe jumped right in when her and I discovered we used the same word to be sarcastic: tragic. And at that moment, we became the inseparable trio.

It got so serious, our group knew we had to have the row at the complete back of the bus: the only row with three connecting seats. An uncanny symbol of our forever connection to each other and the friendship we so quickly built. (I am pretty positive our group hates the word "tragic" now because of us). At this moment, I know the whole "these friendships will last you a lifetime" talk is true. The connection we built in such a short time is unobtainable to anyone else.  WJMC made us a family. Although we live so far, I have a sudden peace we will stay in touch.

Although Chloe and Shannon made my trip to the Capitol city unimaginable, the speakers and the Newseum hit me hard.

We started off at the Newseum and I quickly found out the sacrifices journalists make just to retrieve the truth for those who do not have the ability to discover it themselves. Many even die for the truth. The days after were a whirlwind of different speakers with different positions in the communications world.

Susan Goldberg, first female and current Editor In Chief of National Geographic magazine taught me five tools for the journalistic world. First, make a difference. Second, do what others can't. Third, be part of the conversation. Fourth, act urgently. Fifth, know who you are. "Invent the future."

Multiple speakers at the National Press Club taught be to be constantly curious, journalists are the truth tellers, and accuracy of information always comes before quickness of getting the information out.

David Culver, founder of Rediscovering Cuba, revealed to me a whole different side to the journalistic world: foreign affairs. He also drilled into my mind to always push for what you desire out of the career and to let our emotions pull on us to discover the perfect angle for our articles.

Oh, and then there was Carol Guzy, four time Pulitzer Prize winning photo journalist. No one can convince me that they did not get emotional during her presentation. Her photos were beautiful, touching, and heartbreaking all together. She revealed the importance of having empathy as a journalist. To follow our hearts and trust our guts. "What we do matters." The memorable sentence which stuck with me was "The earth can tremble and change lives at an instant." She left a huge mark on my heart. At that moment, I knew I was created to make a difference in this world. My tool for doing so: my talent for writing.

Kevin McCarthy, entertainment editor and movie critic, said the most important thing which can apply to anyone with any job. "Do what you love, and the money will follow."

I got plain lucky, a God thing occurred. I obtained the oppurtunity to listen to Tom Jackman, reporter for the Washington Post, speak. He revealed the basic love for his job to us and tips on how to succeed. It was more than incredible listening to him showcase his love for his job.

Hopefully, anyone can tell by now WJMC was one to remember and it surely made a mark on my life. Full of crazy emotions: laughs, smiles, and tears. However, this whirlwind of emotion was worth it. I met some of my best friends and finally discovered the purpose of my life.

I asked God for clarification on what to do with my life. How to live it for him. He answered all my worries with this conference.

Dressing Up Frump & My Day

Frump: one word which typically sounds so negative. However, today, I had to turn this negative into a positive.

I am in Washington DC for a whole week studying journalism and media with roughly 300 people and today we had to wear matching t shirts. Not only do I dislike having to wear t shirts to nice places like museums and such, but I accidentally got a medium. If you know me, you know I am tiny, so it swallowed me like a dress. So, of course, I got creative.

Standard shirts are awful if you are trying to look in any way feminine. So, what I did to help slim my body down was wear skinny jeans. Since your torso is tented in a t shirt, tapered pants help slim your other half down.

A creative way to slim your shoulders is a simple cardigan. These tend to squish the boxy sleeve down, so you don't look like a male football player.

I paired my favorite Steve Madden sandals with the outfit because there was a lot of walking, but those shoes are so comfortable, so it worked out perfectly! To top it off (which is ironic) I did the usual half bun because I was in such a hurry this morning.  Lastly, I carried my adorable tote from Target around because it holds everything I need, which is A LOT.
it actually go to this point...

Besides what I wore, the day itself was pretty eventful. It started with a 6:25am breakfast and I will probably get to sleep around 12am. So pretty long.

We started off the day exploring the Newseum and it never ceases to amaze me the impact that place has on me. Journalists go through so much just to practice the freedom of press/speech and to get the truth out to people. It never dawned on me until today how many people actually sacrifice their lives for truth.

Also, we got to hear a former White House press woman and a reporter from the New York Times. To complete the day, we visited the World War memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the MLK & FDR memorials.

Today was filled with a lot of activities, and I cannot wait to see what else happens.

New York "Chic" Style

Being obsessed with fashion and living in San Antonio, Texas are not the two best qualities to contend with. However, when I do catch myself on my "fashion grind", I notice I get quite a number of looks. Not in a judgmental way (which I tend to achieve sometimes as well), I am talking the "wow I love her outfit" stares. This occurs because I dress like a true Manhattan citizen.

I find myself drawn to clothes resembling the City that Never Sleeps. The style is elegant and chic, yet different and slightly edgy. Those words describe the fashion I love. The desire to be elegant and live in New York City is runs through my mind every time I get dressed. So for now I focus on what Armani once said:

"Elegance is not about being noticed, it's about being remembered." - Giorgio Armani

Dressing chic in a city with little to no fashion world is pretty difficult and so is finding inspiration for outfits. Majority of the time, I find myself resorting to Vogue or other magazines. These magazines tend to acquire the New York City Flare I desire.

My outfit today perfectly embodies everything I desire through a life lived in fashion. Chic and edgy, but still sophisticated, yet drawing in the hint of New York Street Style.

My pinstriped top is one I luckily found yesterday at the ever so fashionable Zara. It is pretty unique because it is a little shorter than most blouses, making it a crop top, but with a unique cut. My jeans are high rise skinny pants from the brand STS Blue, which are unbelievably comfortable. The shoes I wore are cobalt pumps from Steve Madden. To add a pop of color besides just blue, I paired a pink / coral necklace and some super cute sunglasses from a boutique style store called Francesca's.

Here is what it looks like on:
I hope you find inspiration through this to not be worried to stand out and exhibit your personal style while still feeling chic and fashion forward.

Dark Lips, Pale Face, Breathin' in Sun Rays?

Fashion is all about standing out and putting yourself out there to show off who you are. There are multiple trends today on social media, like Pinterest, which we so desperately want to try out, but are too afraid to do so. Two of which, I got the nerve to give a shot and I LOVE the result. My look today combines a dark lip with the ever so famous half bun.

A dark lip can be quite the statement, so a hasty tip about them is to never pair dramatic eye make up with a statement lip (unless it's an evening event). It draws way too much attention to many different areas of your face instead of enhancing your beauty, which tends to look like you are wearing too much make up. So today, my makeup is just my normal face routine of foundation and concealer, a light pink blush. My eyes have on just mascara and on my lips is Kat Von D's lipstick in the shade called Vampira.

The half up/ half down top knot I am strutting is a hairstyle which I have seen countless times in magazines and on the runway, but I have been way too frightened to try it. Today, I sort said "what do I have to loose" and tried it out. I am filled with excitement with how it looks. Once again, it is an "uncommon hairstyle", so you don't want to wear clothes of extravagant fashion.

As you can spot, I paired some loose fit navy shorts with a regular long sleeve red and navy striped shirt. Also, I paired nude patent leather flats and a simple gold necklace.
This outfit pulls together nicely because I put a simple outfit with two bold trends!

Like I said before, trends can be quite scary to give a shot, but you have nothing to loose! So try out those trends and do not be afraid of looking different from everyone else. Remember, fashion is not always what everyone is used to seeing.

I hope this article helped you out and pushes you to go outside the box with trends you have a burning desire to try out.

Until next time,

XOXO

A "Light Roast" of France

"If you're going to be sad, might as well be sad in Paris." ~ Blair Waldorf

Although Miss Blair may speak beautifully this sentence, it was all smiles and no tears this morning when I had my little taste of France. No, I did not have the privilege to visit France (I wish), but I did experience the next best thing....

French Pressed Coffee
My pal, Kelsey, persuaded me into trying this revolutionary kind of coffee and it might have been the best thing to happen to me (in the terms of coffee drinkers).

To all you coffee enthusiasts out there, its amazing and you must try it. (IM BEGGING YOU, TRY IT)

Kels and I had a the quaintest little date so here are some pics:

Check back tomorrow for a surprise post!!

Shoes: Jack Rogers

& both of my necklaces were gifts!

If you want see my post about my coffee date at Starbucks click here!!

I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week and do not forget to share this post with your friends.

OOTD: A Day Around Town

Today I had so much to do and I had to wake up early to accomplish it. Early mornings call for coffee runs and (of course) comfortable clothes. However, the trick to comfortable clothes is to style an outfit which still is sophisticated while straying from discomfort. (No one wants to wake up exceedingly early just to put on an uncomfortable pair of pants).

The key to it is BASICS. Everyone needs those "go to" shirts in their closet which file under the 3 C's. Comfortable. Conformable. Cute. The shirt which can be worn with multiple accessories and can conform into casual or even slightly dressy.

Down below is the perfect shirt for the job! This is one of my FAVORITE outfits so far.

Shirt: J Crew
Shorts: Express
Shoes: Target
Purse: Kate Spade (is there anything better??)
Necklace: Gift

I am thrilled to see the sun peaking through the clouds today, I hope it stays!

XOXO,
Kenzie Rae
